MSP marketing: the channels that actually bring in clients
By Steven MoreySteven Morey has spent 27 years in digital, leading marketing and sales for technology businesses in Australia and the US. Through Opollo, his MSP marketing agency, he's run thousands of campaigns for hundreds of managed service providers. That's where the pricing questions in these guides come from.
Most Australian MSPs grow through some mix of these six channels. None of them work in isolation, and the right mix depends on how much time versus budget you have to spend right now.
Referrals and word of mouth
The channel most MSPs already rely on most heavily. Cheap and high-trust, but it scales only as fast as your existing client base and network do. It's not something you can turn up when you need more volume this quarter.
Website and organic search
A business searching "managed it services [city]" or "it support cost" is already close to a decision. Ranking for these takes sustained content investment and doesn't pay off quickly, but it compounds: unlike paid channels, the traffic doesn't stop the day you stop spending.
Case studies and testimonials
Concrete, named (with permission) outcomes for real clients do more to build trust with a prospective business than generic service descriptions, especially for a decision as relationship-dependent as choosing an IT provider.
Vendor and partner co-marketing
Microsoft, or your RMM/security vendor, often has partner marketing funds or co-branded content programs. Underused by smaller MSPs, and it's marketing spend that isn't entirely yours to find.
Paid search and social
Fast to turn on, fast to turn off, and immediately measurable. The tradeoff is that cost per lead in competitive IT-services categories is high, and it stops the moment the budget does.
Lead-generation marketplaces
A marketplace like msppie qualifies buyers before they reach you, so you're not spending marketing budget generating the enquiry yourself. The tradeoff: you're one of up to three providers on any given lead, not the only option. See how MSPs get clients for a fuller comparison against the other channels here.
Choosing where to start
If you have more time than budget, referrals and content compound over months. If you need volume this quarter, paid search or a lead-generation marketplace can produce enquiries faster. Weigh that against what a self-generated enquiry actually costs you in time and tools.
